Accountability guidelines for the Internet

These are some accountability guidelines that our group members have used successfully to help keep them away from Internet pornography. The idea behind them is to limit accessibility or make their viewing more public.

Please note: performing these actions will not free a person from captivity to sexual sin. Transformation by Jesus Christ is the only means of finding freedom from sexual sin. These guidelines are merely restrictions to help carry a person through times of temptation.

We reiterate as a ministry:

The most effective protection from Internet pornography is a changed heart.

Use a filtered internet service provider rather than unfiltered service or filtering software based in your own computer.

Move your computer to a more visible and accessible area of the house (for example, put it in the living room rather than the basement).

Set up your office or home computer and turn your computer screen so that it is easily visible to passersby.

Keep the office or home door open when working on the computer.

Do not arrive at work before your coworkers; do not be the last one to leave.

Shut off the computer for the night before your wife goes to bed.

Give the mouse and keyboard to your wife whenever she goes out and leaves you at home alone.

Play a praise and worship CD as you work on the computer.

Keep photos of your wife and children posted next to the computer screen.

Only use the computer when you have a specific purpose to be on it or a specific site to visit, then turn it off when you've finished that task.

Do not get trapped in the deception, "Well, I'll just check my e-mail to see if anyone has written me today" with a lot of unaccountable time on your hands; have secure appointments before and after you get on-line to limit your time as you check e-mail.

Keep out of all chat rooms, even Christian ones; get a filtered internet service provider that eliminates them completely.

Keep accountable with someone regularly for all of your use of the computer.

Get rid of the Internet altogether.
